The Sheriff’s Office Needs You!
By Santa Cruz County Sheriff Steve Robbins
The Sheriff’s Office has a long and proud tradition of serving the various communities in Santa Cruz County since 1850. To be selected as a peace officer or corrections officer with the Sheriff’s Office or any police agency is an accomplishment in which an individual can take great pride. We are looking for those individuals that want to make a difference in their community and neighborhoods and can feel a sense of accomplishment in providing public safety for County residents and businesses.
Becoming a peace officer or corrections officer is not an easy process but is worth the time and effort. Out of 100 applicants, perhaps one to five individuals will eventually be selected and make it through the extensive background and training process. We depend on each other, which is why our selection standards are so high.
But we are looking for folks who like challenges, can problem solve, and don’t want to work behind a desk for their whole career. And we want more women to become members of our department as well as those with bilingual skills. Many of our applicants are athletes or enjoy being physically active. We recruit individuals who come from all walks of life and ages.
The Sheriff’s Office is the largest law enforcement agency in Santa Cruz County, employing 330 deputies, correctional officers, community service officers, security officers, and administrative staff. The Sheriff is responsible for law enforcement in all unincorporated areas of the County, the operation of all jail facilities, protection of judges and the court system, the service of civil papers, and the security and safety of all residents and visitors to Santa Cruz County.
We are proud of the diversity reflected in our workforce and the manner in which our employees relate to one another.
Lots of Room to Grow
Working for the Sheriff’s Office is different in many ways from working for other law enforcement agencies because there is so much opportunity for professional growth.
We train in a variety of law enforcement disciplines frequently and more than most agencies throughout California.
We have a number of dynamic specialized units, including crime scene investigations, SWAT team, bomb team, police K-9 service dog program, school resource officer, correctional emergency response team, rapid response tactical unit, parks patrol, air squadron, search and rescue, narcotics enforcement, detectives, and others. This agency can provide you with many avenues for development through your career.
To better serve our communities, we have Sheriff’s Community Service Centers in San Lorenzo Valley, Live Oak-Soquel, Aptos, and South County as well as provide police services at Cabrillo College. We work in partnership with neighborhood associations, community action groups, business associations, other governmental agencies, and schools, all in an effort to provide safety and improve the quality of life in Santa Cruz County. But we need your help to fulfill this mission!
