Hart Hired as Associate Superintendent of Business for Pajaro
Former Pajaro Business Chief McHenry Not to Return
By Linda Fridy
The Pajaro Valley Unified School District chose one of its own to replace retiring associate superintendent of business services and interim superintendent Terry McHenry. Trustees approved the contract on Feb. 28 for Mary Hart, who has worked with McHenry for more than a decade, most recently as director of finance.

“She’s been Terry McHenry’s right-hand woman for a very long time,” said Trustee Karen Osmundson. “I’m very excited that she’s going to be our new associate superintendent.”

Hart stepped directly into her new role the next day, as McHenry completed his contract as interim superintendent that night. He had continued in both positions since last spring â€" taking one salary and two stipends â€" in spite of his initial plans to retire at the end of the last school year.

The board had delayed interviews for the associate superintendent position after advertising it to review the district’s administrative structure. After deciding to continue with the current job description and salary range, the district interviewed finalists and recommended Hart in only four weeks.

McHenry had asked the board for a chance to present a summary of his time with Pajaro. He recalled serving through the near-bankruptcy of the district under former Pajaro superintendent Merrill Grant, the separation controversy when Aptos parents attempted to form their own district, millions of dollars of new school construction after a successful bond measure and renovations, and the redistricting that resulted from the opening of a new high school.

The creation of a technology department and improved network capabilities were a source of pride for McHenry, he said. As he finished, his voice broke with emotion, and he was given a standing ovation.

Hart seemed delighted to continue on where McHenry left off.

“I’ve been with him all the way through it, so it’s a great experience you couldn’t get anywhere else,” she said following the meeting.

McHenry will still occasionally serve the district. He was given a $697 per diem contract as the special assistant to the interim superintendent.
