New Years Eve Do-It-Yourself Parade Returns to Pacific Ave
By Michael Thomas
The eclectic Last Night Santa Cruz parade will return to downtown Santa Cruz again this year, gathering near Saturn Café at sunset and marching the length of Pacific Avenue to a final “hoe-down” near the clock tower.

“I recommend people get together with their friends, do something creative and spontaneous … and have fun,” said the Free Radio Santa Cruz personality who goes by the name Rico Thunder. Thunder shuns the term “organizer” in regards to the parade, describing it as solely a “do-it-yourself” event.

However, he emerged as a default spokesperson for Last Night participants last year after Santa Cruz police were caught infiltrating planning meetings for the event. The officers lied about their names and intentions, and the incident spawned a public outcry and two investigations of police conduct.
This year, Last Night still lacks permits or a formal sanction from the City, but that’s the point, according to event literature.
“When we ask permission to live our lives, to celebrate, to come together, to express dissent, we legitimate the power of institutions over us. We give up our power to make our own choices,” a web announcement reads.

This year, performances will include the Santa Cruz Trash Orchestra, The Great Morgani, the Ukelele Club of Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Pipes and Drums, Stiltwalkers and more. Of course, participants are encouraged to add their own inspiration to the mix.
