Bethany University Closing
Bethany University president Dr. Lewis Shelton announced that the Scotts Valley-based Christian college will close at the end of its summer session on Aug. 15. It has some master's program classes that are continuing through the summer.

The closure was announced after a plan to get private investor support to continue instruction fell through. Summer orientations have been cancelled and transition options for students are being developed.

The university has been facing uncertain finances in recent years. It had to scale back plans to replace its cafeteria building lost to fire in June 2009 because of costs, and this spring reports of the school's financial troubles increased.

The university is working to transition students through agreements with other universities and to expedite student requests, Shelton wrote on a website statement. It suggested students may contact Vanguard University, Northwest University and Wiliam Jessup University, with which negotiations have already begun.

The oldest of the Assemblies of God colleges, Bethany College moved to Scotts Valley in 1950 and became a four-year, degree granting institution in 1955.

The college added graduate programs about five years ago and changed its name to Bethany University.

It recently served more than 500 students and offered 18 majors, according to its website.
