Collision

An 18-year-old male driver decided to try a trick common in movies and ended up disabling his vehicle. Zachary Shober was driving on Blue Bonnet Lane when he intentionally ran the stop sign at King's Village Road in an attempt to "drift" the left turn, said Sgt. David Ball of Scotts Valley Police. Instead, Shober smashed into the curb. Fortunately, neither he nor anyone else was injured. The driver was cited.

Shoplifting

In a buy-one-get-one-free approach to shoplifting, a woman shopping in Kmart apparently took a battery charger out of its packaging and placed it in a new purse, which she then purchased. Heather M. Fanuef, age 24, was stopped after she left the store and cited with petty theft.

Sentencing in Rape Case

Del Eddy Colegrove, age 42 of Los Gatos, was sentenced to 64 years in prison following a two-week jury trial before Judge Paul Marigonda. Colegrove was convicted of multiple forcible sex acts against his 16-year-old stepdaughter. He will not be eligible for parole until 2063. Colegrove's sister spoke at the sentencing, saying he had molested her when they were teenagers. The victim did not attend the sentencing.

Theft from Vehicle

Someone removed and stole a trailer hitch from a truck while it was parked at the victim's residence.

Marijuana Growing

During a probation search, the officer smelled marijuana and found that Justin V. Ravanelli, age 20, was growing a marijuana plant in his room.

Collision

A Boulder Creek resident suffered major injuries after he lost control of his truck and rolled it over the guardrail on southbound Highway 17. Gary A. Robinson II, age 29, was driving north of the Mount Hermon exit when he failed to negotiate a right curve, hitting the right guardrail, the CHP reported. When Robinson attempted to correct to the left, the 2005 Toyota Tundra overturned and rolled several times, eventually hitting and rolling over the center divider, landing in the northbound lane. The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was airlifted to Stanford Medical Clinic. Alcohol was not a factor, according to the CHP.

Pedestrian Hit-and-Run

A 14-year-old pedestrian sustained major injuries when he was struck by a car, which then fled the scene. The victim had been walking with two other people in the bicycle lane of 30th Avenue north of Portal Drive when he was hit by a 1997 Buick Le Sabre. CHP officers later tracked Linda F. Sutherland, age 56, to her home. She was charged with felony hit-and-run and booked in County Jail.

Warrant Arrest

During a stop for a vehicle violation, the passenger fled on foot. When Michael J. Gregory, age 30 of Santa Cruz, was apprehended, the officer discovered Gregory had an outstanding warrant. He was also charged with obstructing an officer and resisting arrest.

Drug Possession

After spotting a disabled motorcycle with no license plate by the side of the road, a sheriff's patrol learned the driver was on parole and subject to search. Ronald B. Canfield, age 50 of Boulder Creek, had a syringe and methamphetamine on his person, according to Sgt. Greg Lansdowne of the Sheriff's Office. Canfield was charged with parole violations in addition to the possession charges.

Someone managed to start a fire in a toilet at the restrooms in Peery Park near Nob Hill Foods.

Shoplifting

A man was spotted leaving Safeway with two bags of groceries he had not purchased. When a sheriff's deputy located the suspect, he attempted to flee. Gerald S. Bosinger, age 41 of Davenport, ran to a ravine before he was apprehended. He was charged with parole violations and petty theft. The food was recovered and returned.

Drug Possession

A sheriff's patrol responding to a report of a suspicious car and possible drug activity approached two men in a parked car who exhibited signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance. Brian C. Eaton, age 33, was found in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, while Donald C. Whitmore, age 38, tested positive for opiates. The men face probation violations along with the drug charges.

Suspected Drug Sale

After observing what appeared to be a hand-off, a sheriff's deputy stopped Jacob S. Crawford, age 26 of Watsonville, who exhibited signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance. A search found six ecstasy pills and cell phone messages consistent with drug sales. He was charged with possession with intent to sell.

Drug, Weapon Possession

A sheriff's patrol stopped an RV for a vehicle tag violation and found the occupants were on probation and subject to search. Officers found a billy club within reach of the driver's seat, .5 grams of methamphetamine and three glass pipes. Kurt A. Miedecke, age 48 of Watsonville, and Donna M. Bruni, age 50 of Santa Cruz, were taken to County Jail on possession charges and probation violations.

Theft

A resident reported that someone entered an unlocked shed and stole the BBQ grill stored there. In addition, wood was also taken from the property. The total loss was valued at $305.

Stolen Truck Recovered

Capitola Police solved two crimes with one arrest after a report of someone using a stolen credit card led detectives to a stolen truck. The gray 2000 Toyota Tundra had been reported stolen Nov. 20 with a description of the suspect, said Sgt. Darryl Harrison. Then police got a call about the stolen card on 41st Avenue. That tip helped investigators locate Bryan K. Moore, age 27 of Aptos, who was charged with possession of stolen property and probation violations. He was being held in County Jail at press time. The truck was recovered.

House Fire

The residents escaped safely, but an early afternoon fire gutted a Boulder Creek duplex. The fire was well underway with a column of smoke and breaking windows by the time emergency officials were alerted and arrived on scene. The occupants had left the house, and firefighters rescued pets including dogs and snakes that were still in the home.
