Maldonado Tapped for Lt. Governor Opening
Governor Goes to Senator Who Supported His Budget Plan
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger nominated State Senator Abel Maldonado as lieutenant governor, replacing John Garamendi, who was recently elected to Congress.

A moderate Republican, Maldonado represents portions of Santa Cruz County within the 15th Senate District.

After previewing his selection on the Jay Leno television show Nov. 23, Schwarzenegger in his formal announcement the next day praised Maldonado as "post-partisan."

"He has cast politically difficult votes to increase the minimum wage and on more than one occasion to pass the state budget in order to save California from financial ruin," the governor said. Schwarzenegger also praised Maldonado's support for open primaries, redistricting reform and campaign finance reform.

Maldonado's nomination must be approved by both houses of the state legislature. Political observers have noted that should the Republican move into the executive branch, it gives Democrats an opportunity to win back a seat in the Senate, with names like former Assemblyman John Laird being bandied as possible candidates.

Some Democratic leaders had suggested that the lieutenant governor's post could be left open, saving the cost of a special election to fill Maldonado's seat.

As he accepted the governor's nomination, Maldonado called for elected officials to work together to solve the state's economic woes.

"Republicans and Democrats must come together, put party aside and put people first and come up with a solution that moves California in the right direction without hurting its most voiceless and vulnerable population," he said when asked about the state budget crisis.

Maldonado, the son of Mexican immigrants, will be the first Hispanic Republican to hold a state office in more than 130 years, the governor noted.
