Thirty-Meter Telescope Discussion
The Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT), which is slated to be built on the inactive volcano Mauna Kea in Hawaii, will be the subject of a free public lecture by UCSC astronomer Jerry Nelson at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the Del Mar Theatre in Santa Cruz. Nelson is a project scientist for the TMT.

The TMT will be the most powerful telescope ever constructed, allowing astronomers to peer back to the very origins of the universe, look for planets around nearby stars, and test many of the fundamental laws of physics.

Nelson helped pioneer the use of adaptive optics, which lets astronomers sidestep the problems of blurred light traveling through turbulent air, permitting sharp images from ground-based telescopes. The TMT will use a segmented mirror design to correct for that effect, with each mirror correcting independently.

Nelson's talk will be titled "The Thirty-Meter Telescope: Galileo's legacy 400 years later." The TMT is currently scheduled to begin operations in 2018. For more information, call 831-459-2844.
