Aviza Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
Scotts Valley-based Aviza Technology, a supplier of advanced semiconductor capital equipment and process technologies, filed a voluntary petition under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code on June 10.

The company attributed its financial difficulties to falling global demand in its industry. It has laid off and furloughed workers and reduced salaries in an attempt to restructure, and recently entered an agreement to sell certain of its assets and businesses to Sumitomo Precision Products based in Japan.

That plan is still expected to go forward during the bankruptcy proceedings, according to a company statement. Aviza will also continue essential operations, including product support, service and warranty programs.

Its 43-acre Scotts Valley site has been on the market for several years. Initial deals fell through when the city refused to rezone the site for housing. A $13 million offer from commercial Fowler Property Acquisitions in March 2008 looked promising, but that firm backed out after inspections in August.

The company's systems are used in a variety of segments of the semiconductor market, such as advanced silicon for memory devices, advanced 3-D packaging and power integrated circuits for communications. In addition to the Scotts Valley location, Aviza has manufacturing, R&D, sales and customer support facilities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Taiwan, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia.
