Pacific Collegiate Celebrates 10 Years
Pacific Collegiate School had much to celebrate at its May 20 anniversary. After starting in space rented from a local church, the charter school has grown into one of the nation's premier public schools.

The academically rigorous charter was first rejected by Santa Cruz City Schools, eventually gaining support from the Santa Cruz County Office of Education. It currently serves 435 students in grades seven through 12 at its Swift Street campus on the west side of Santa Cruz, and more than 450 students entered its lottery for 110 spots next year.

With 54 seniors this year, PCS will have graduated more than 340 students this June.
The anniversary event featured elected officials and local education leaders as well as founders, staff and alumni. Included in the turnout, was County Superintendent of Schools Michael Watkins and members of the County Board of Education including Dana Sales, Arnie Levine and Kathy Mann.

Cabrillo College president Brian King, county supervisor and former PCS board member John Leopold, county tax collector and part-time PCS instructor Fred Keeley, former PCS board members and now South County charter cousin Ceiba College Prep founder Tom Brown and Ceiba board member Robert Bixby were also present.

Newly appointed Santa Cruz City superintendent Gary Bloom also was in attendance. PCS and Santa Cruz City vied over lease terms for PCS's campus, reaching a short-term agreement.

However, most importantly after a decade, PCS students continue to excel, all taking college-level advanced placement courses and scoring at the top of both state standardized and college placement tests.

The challenges continue as well. PCS is searching for a permanent principal and ways to address a large waiting list of students.
