Watsonville Killer Denied Parole
Edgar Raul Valencia, who is serving a life sentence in Soledad State Prison for one murder and six attempted murders in Watsonville in 1993, was denied parole on the grounds that he continues to pose an unreasonable risk of danger to society. In the April 1993 incident, Valencia returned with two friends to a party in a warehouse where the friends had been denied entry earlier because they were intoxicated.

Valencia brought with him a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle and approached some partygoers outside the warehouse. As they fled, he fired into the warehouse until his weapon was empty. Eighteen-year-old Damien Caesar, an aspiring musician, was killed, and five others were wounded.

At his trial, Valencia claimed to believe his bullets would "bounce off" the metal building. Santa Cruz County Assistant District Attorney Alex Byers appeared before the Parole Board arguing against Valencia's release. Valencia will not be eligible for parole again until 2014. n
