Wowak Officially Launches Campaign for Sheriff
Sheriff Phil Wowak kicked off his election campaign with two events in early October. He was appointed to the job this spring by the County Board of Supervisors when Sheriff Steve Robbins retired.

Wowak noted that he announced his intention to run for the position when he was nominated, and filed papers backed in April. This fall marks his public announcement of the campaign. The Watsonville and Santa Cruz kick-off activities allowed him to meet community members and begin gathering support.

"This is something very new for me," said Wowak of a political campaign.

He was a public supporter of candidates in recent campaigns, including D.A. Bob Lee, now-Judge Ari Symons and his predecessor retired Sheriff Robbins.

"It's a new side of the job. I'm actually enjoying it. … It's very humbling, the number of people who have called or written to offer support. Some of them are people I've never met, who just know someone I've worked with in the community. It's been absolutely amazing," he said.

The non-partisan county election will be June 8, 2010, but Wowak said he was taking advantage of the slight lull in law enforcement activity that happens each year after summer tourists depart and before the holiday season begins.

No other candidates for sheriff have filed an intention to run yet.

Another recent appointee, Assessor-Recorder Sean Saldavia, filed for his position in August. Other incumbents who officially filed to run are County Superintendent of Schools Michael Watkins and District Attorney Bob Lee.
