Flea Market to Reopen at Former Drive-In in March
Goodwill Industries and the local Sutter Health affiliate have worked out a one-year lease that allows the popular flea market to return to its home at the former Skyview Drive-In. The flea market is expected to reopen in early March with its previous Friday, Saturday and Sunday schedule.

The lease allows the flea market to operate while Sutter Health develops its use plans and Goodwill searches for a long-term home for the market. An additional 12-month extension is also possible under the agreement.

Goodwill will also use the market as a donor drop-off site.

Sutter, which locally operates a surgery center and the Santa Cruz Medical Foundation as well as the county Visiting Nurses Association, bought the drive-in property last fall with plans to develop it for additional doctors’ offices and medical facilities.

Sutter has pledged that $125,000 from the lease revenue will be donated to Healthy Kids of Santa Cruz County, on top of the Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center’s annual $100,000 donation.

Healthy Kids offers access to health insurance to children of low-income families.

“We are thrilled to be able to further support Healthy Kids of Santa Cruz County,” said Dr. Larry deGhetaldi, president of Sutter’s Santa Cruz region, in the Feb. 8 announcement of the agreement. “Providing all children with health insurance not only is the socially responsible thing to do but also makes good economic sense.”

Goodwill’s CEO was equally delighted that his organization could help continue the county’s flea market tradition.

“The flea market is consistent with our other efforts to raise funds through the collection and sale of clothing and household items… creating employment that benefits and protects the environment,” said Goodwill’s regional CEO Michael Paul in the same announcement.
